Happy Idiot Day

   08.10.05

One of my favorite quotes of all time comes from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Die Leiden des Jungen Werther. (Or, if you prefer, The Sorrows of Young Werther.) For those who don't know, Goethe is a dead German guy. He wrote Faust, as well as the aforementioned Werther.

Legend has it that thousands of young men and women read Werther and were so overcome with grief that they killed themselves. I don't know that it's quite that sad, but it does have some great, mopey lines in it:

If I were not an idiot, I could lead the best and happiest of lives.

And tell me, who can't relate to that?

Werther is presented in diary form. The above quote leads off the August 10th entry, making this "Idiot Day" to all true afficianados of self-deprication.
